FileMaker Server’s Default PHP Will Stop Receiving Security Updates

What’s happening?

The default version of PHP that ships with FileMaker Server 17.0.4 up to 18.0.2 is 7.1.19. This particular version is no longer receiving active support and won’t receive any security updates starting on Dec 1st, 2019. Any version before FileMaker server 17.0.4 uses a version of PHP that is no longer supported. Running web apps on an unsupported version of PHP is not recommended, and will compromise the security of your application.

What you MUST know about the Startup Restoration Feature

FileMaker Server added a new feature to its existing tools to ensure the integrity of its hosted databases. After checking files at startup, and before opening any database, if inconsistencies are found due to abnormal closing of files (i.e. power failure or crash), FileMaker Server now uses the restoration log feature to restore files to their last consistent state.

With the release of FileMaker Pro Advanced 18, full access users can delegate user management to any user. This tool reduces the administrative burden on database administrators, in addition to decreasing the response time when it comes to changes in user accounts. For example, the person(s) conducting employee onboarding/offboarding can now create, edit or delete users. Additionally, someone like an office manager would now be able to reset user passwords instead of sending a request to a database administrator.
