FileMaker Devcon Aptitude For Apps

The countdown has begun! FileMaker announced today that the 21st annual Developer’s Conference, or DevCon as it’s affectionately known, will be held July 18-21 at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. This is the largest gathering of FileMaker developers in the world, with 1,500 of our closest friends gathering in one place to geek out about FileMaker. This year is shaping up to be rather exciting, as the theme is “Aptitude for Apps” – focusing on creating and enhancing the capabilities of creating custom apps for the desktop, iOS and the web. Attendees will get the first peek at the future direction of the FileMaker Platoform and learn from other developers’ tried-and-true skills in design, mobility and app creation.

Monthly FileMaker Meetup – March 2016

Our FileMaker monthly Meetup group met this last Wednesday in a new space! It was beautiful and the conference room was enormous – with a convenient wireless presentation system for laptops to present on a giant projection screen. Our many thanks goes out to Ken Skeen and the fine folks at Hanna Andersson that graciously offered their space for our meeting, to Gerald Chang of Eight2 for providing drinks and Chris Irvine of ThreeProng.com for bringing the pizza and co-hosting the meeting!

Our topic was: FileMaker Alternative Modal Dialogue Showcase. The idea was to show alternative methods for creating a modal window, without using a custom dialogue. It was great to delve into the different ways in which developers will tackle and solve the same problem in different ways.

From Database Developer to Web Developer Thanks to WebDirect

Tags :

By Thomas Meglasson III

I don’t know PHP, and my HTML and CSS skills are rudimentary at best. Nevertheless, I recently became a web developer!

Fortunately, with FileMaker’s WebDirect, I don’t need those skills to make a beautiful website. I build it all right in FileMaker, using skills I already have, and then publish straight to the web with a FileMaker Server.

I was recently tasked with creating a conference registration system for a large association’s annual convention. They expect around 900 to 1,000 registrants this year. The system had capture the demographic data of the registrants, look up their membership data if needed, let them choose their attendance options and pay for both the conference and a membership renewal.

fmRecentRecords

Today we are excited to release our second module for FileMaker developers: fmRecentRecords. It’s an easy-to-deploy module for FileMaker that gives you a simple way to add a history to the dashboard or menu screen that your users will appreciate. The idea behind it is to make it trivial for a user to get back to what they were working on from the home screen by presenting a list of the records they recently viewed. The assumption here is that your user is probably going to be visiting a small set of records on a regular basis — at least in the short term. Automatically keeping those records at the user’s fingertips saves them the trouble of searching for the same record multiple times a day.

Excel to FM hashtagfilemaker

Have you ever uttered the phrase, “These Excel spreadsheets are turning into monsters!”, or perhaps you’ve heard, “Excel is the place where data goes to die”? Today we asked our Senior Developer, David Weiner, to recount one of his favorite Excel to FileMaker success stories. This is his story.

Automatically Perform Script on Server

Automatically Perform Script on Server
By David Weiner

The ability of FileMaker Pro 13 and 14 to perform a script on the server instead of locally on the client’s machine is a huge potential boon for productivity. Tasks for which a user might otherwise have to wait to complete can be accomplished in the background without holding them up. Performing certain scripted tasks on the server is also much, much faster in many cases. So, it’s nice to perform a script on the server whenever you can.

The FileMaker Portland Meetup Group met on Wednesday, June 10, 2015. Our thanks goes out to our co-hosts, Gerald Chang, of Eight2 and Joey Grimaldi, of ODI Technologies, as well as all the fine folks who took the time to hang out with us and geek out.

One of the highlights of the meeting included a presentation by Chris Irvine. His presentation on glyphs and icons within FileMaker 14 were both fascinating and enlightening. He has a detailed post about it here. It’s well worth the read – we highly recommend it!

Our next FileMaker Portland Meetup is scheduled for Wednesday, July 8, 2015. We hope to see all of you there!
