FileMaker Devcon Aptitude For Apps

The countdown has begun! FileMaker announced today that the 21st annual Developer’s Conference, or DevCon as it’s affectionately known, will be held July 18-21 at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. This is the largest gathering of FileMaker developers in the world, with 1,500 of our closest friends gathering in one place to geek out about FileMaker. This year is shaping up to be rather exciting, as the theme is “Aptitude for Apps” – focusing on creating and enhancing the capabilities of creating custom apps for the desktop, iOS and the web. Attendees will get the first peek at the future direction of the FileMaker Platoform and learn from other developers’ tried-and-true skills in design, mobility and app creation.

Our FileMaker monthly Meetup group met this last Wednesday in a new space! It was beautiful and the conference room was enormous – with a convenient wireless presentation system for laptops to present on a giant projection screen. Our many thanks goes out to Ken Skeen and the fine folks at Hanna Andersson that graciously offered their space for our meeting, to Gerald Chang of Eight2 for providing drinks and Chris Irvine of ThreeProng.com for bringing the pizza and co-hosting the meeting!

Our topic was: FileMaker Alternative Modal Dialogue Showcase. The idea was to show alternative methods for creating a modal window, without using a custom dialogue. It was great to delve into the different ways in which developers will tackle and solve the same problem in different ways.

I don’t know PHP, and my HTML and CSS skills are rudimentary at best. Nevertheless, I recently became a web developer!

Fortunately, with FileMaker’s WebDirect, I don’t need those skills to make a beautiful website. I build it all right in FileMaker, using skills I already have, and then publish straight to the web with a FileMaker Server.

I was recently tasked with creating a conference registration system for a large association’s annual convention. They expect around 900 to 1,000 registrants this year. The system had capture the demographic data of the registrants, look up their membership data if needed, let them choose their attendance options and pay for both the conference and a membership renewal.
